Clothing Ideas, the hows and whys of it all.
The average wind speed at the beach is 10 to 15 miles per hour. You hair is going to blow and you need to make sure that it is secure before going to your session. Even if you never use hair spray or other products to hold hair in place, it is a good idea to use it before coming to the beach for the beach portrait. Even a small breeze can blow hair in front of eyes and cause people to keep moving their arms and hands to remove it. My advice is to use some before you arrive or bring it along in case you need it. Hair bands and ponytails are another good alternative. The photographer is very busy out there and it is very important that you pay attention to you hair as he/she can’t reasonably fix everyone’s hair.
No one wants to talk about it but it is hot on the beach. It may be wise to bring a small towel to the beach with you to wipe away sweat. Sweat causes shine on the face and dark spots on clothing. If you sweat a lot, you can purchase underarm pads that will reduce the sweat on clothing. Sweat also causes the sand to stick to your body parts that touch the sand. Be aware of this and wipe away the sand upon standing up. Sandy legs make for an unpleasant image. Each person is responsible for making themselves as neat as possible. Our graphics department can remove sand but it is a very difficult process and can get costly for the customer, graphically.
- Short Skirts and Baggy Shorts
While we are on the topic of unpleasant things. Everyone should dress for their body type. Many times you will be sitting on a dune or Rocks and the photographer will be shooting into you. The area between short skirt hems and your leg often will show your undergarments, if we are not careful. It may look blacked out to the photographer’s naked eye, once the flash goes off, that area will be illuminated. Be aware of your leg position and try and wear skirts that will cover those areas while seated. Same message goes for men in baggy shorts. Guys sometimes sit with their knees up and open. This means underwear will be seen. Be aware! We really recommend Long pants. No not “I am going to church and i am super formal for the beach pants” We mean Long linen or canvas pants. When the hems are rolled up slightly, the pants take on a casual nantucket beach look. Super good looking on the men.. jus sayin…
- Transition Lenses/Sun Glasses
Please be aware of your eye wear. Transition lenses become very dark on the beach and even if you need them to see, consider taking them off for your photograph. Same goes for sun glasses.
- Shoes and Socks
Many times older people refuse to remove their foot wear. Please discuss this in advance and decide if socks and shoes on one or two people is the look you want for your family portrait. And remember to paint your toenails and nails in a color you want to be able to see in your images. If you don’t want bright orange nails – don’t paint them that color. They can not be digitally correct easily.
Small Children sometimes have a favorite beach toy that they like. It sometimes makes a great shot if they are allowed to hold it. Depending upon the child, it is sometimes the only way to get them to sit still for a shot. Older children may want to bring a surfboard or skim board, or some other favorite beach item. It all adds to the personality of the shot. We do have props available upon request. (some charges may apply)
- Classic Beach Portrait
Clothing is as important as the location and lighting and posing. If you’re looking to have pictures taken of just yourself & your significant other, you have, in my opinion, a lot more flexibility in terms of your wardrobe. If it’s a family session, particularly something with 4 or more people, I’d highly suggest wearing some similarly toned clothing. The beach is clean, it’s white, it’s simple. I love to get color in my photos, but too many people in too many different colors tend to detract from the photo. Keep it simple. Like I said, a little color contrast between two people, or between groups is fun.
For the look of the classic beach portrait everyone should dress in coordinated colors NOT outfits. Dressing for your body type makes your images much more personal and realistic. Capri pants and wrapped tops, sun dress’, linen pants and linen or cotton shirts and old worn blue jeans, are just a few fun ideas . Colors like chocolate, sky blues, off whites or whites, sun kissed colors like peach, mint green and tans really add some spice to an image. Remember we will be shooting on suger white sand. We want you to stand out as much as possible , but in a good way.
Some Alternatives: Tutus on little girls vs a super formal white or classic look. Linen pants and casual shirts on the guys, for a more manly appearance. Be aware that white on the beach is typically see through. For little ones that means diapers and undies will show unless they have the proper slips and flesh toned personal garments on. Especially you ladies, keep the personal garments in the flesh tone color scale and they won’t show through your shirts and pants. Also, white bottoms make your bottom look wider than it really is….jus sayin’
To make it different you can choose a pastel or light color instead of the white for shirts and tops like sky blue, light pink or pale creamy orange. The alternative to pastel for shirts is bright highly saturated colors like red, and pink.
- Multiple Families
When shooting multiple families together – if you would like to differentiate each family, each sub family can wear a matching base color.
Unfortunately are not allowed on public beaches. If at a private location, we love pets!!
- Clothing and Accessories for Women
Women look best clothing that suits their body type. Short sleeve and sleeveless make this look very summery. Keep Jewelry simple. Try and cover the parts of your body that you don’t want to show the world.
- Clothing and Accessories for Men
Men should wear shirts that flatter their personal style and body type. Button down shirts in linen materials ( linen breathes). Short sleeve shirts look more summery than long sleeve shirts but long sleeve shirts rolled up from the cuff look super masculine and very beachy.
For summer portraits, we suggest everyone to be barefoot. This uniformity works best and also creates a more summery image.
- Infants and Small Children
It is helpful if they are rested and fed before they arrive for the photo shoot. Bring snacks for them, juice and a towel to wipe sand away from their eyes.
One of our biggest challenges is customers bringing their personal cameras to the beach and shooting behind our photographer. You are a part of the appointment. We need you in the images or helping with your children. They may think our photographer is funny, but typically they’ll think you are hilarious making monkey faces and playing with them to get the real smiles that your expecting us to capture. We reserve the right to end the photo shoot without refund if this happens. It is not only distracting to your family as well as the photographer. But, you have already invested in us to capture your families portraits. The distraction of a second photographer poses unnecessary problems. Such as everyone looking in different directions. One person not paying attention to what the photographer is trying to capture is like trying to watch 2 shows at the same time, impossible. The photographers uses his/her knowledge to pose and position according to the available light, and for someone to stand behind him/her with a personal camera and command attention away from the photographer is counterproductive to having a wonderful experience. Remember, to enjoy your session. Be a part of the memories being created and captured and not stuck behind the lens.

We want to be in contact with you in case you are lost or stuck in beach traffic.
